Greece's exports of canned peaches to the United States reach historic highs.
According to customs statistics, from January to November 2021, Greece exported 23,500 tons of canned peaches to the United States—reaching the highest level on record. The average export price was $1,526 per ton, a 20% increase year-on-year. For the entire year of 2021, Greece’s total exports of canned peaches to the U.S. grew by 24%, totaling 25,000 tons. Meanwhile, Greece’s exports of semi-processed fruit to Thailand amounted to 16,500 tons, down 35% compared to the previous year—but remained stable compared to earlier years. The average export price was $1,221 per ton (FOB), representing a significant 35% rise year-on-year. Spain emerged as Europe’s second-largest importer of U.S. canned peaches, with exports totaling 5,044 tons from January to November 2021. The average price stood at $1,680 per ton, up 26% from the same period last year. Meanwhile, China—the traditional and largest supplier of U.S. canned peaches—exported a total of 41,300 tons to the U.S. in 2021, marking a 22% decline compared to the previous year. However, the average export price climbed by 23% year-on-year to $1,300 per ton. The primary reasons behind this trend include: first, since the U.S. imposed additional tariffs on Chinese imports starting in 2019, China’s exports of canned peaches to the U.S. have steadily declined; and second, soaring shipping costs have prompted U.S. importers to shift their focus toward European products.
