On January 25, 2022, the official website of the Russian Federation government published a consultation document proposing experimental regulations for labeling canned food products. Key details include: (1) From May 1, 2022, to February 28, 2023, products such as meat, meat by-products, vegetable and fruit preserves, and canned goods will be required to bear labels within the Russian Federation. A specific list of canned items has been provided, including canned fish, caviar, canned crustaceans, mollusks, and other aquatic invertebrates, smoked seafood products, as well as canned vegetables, fruits, and fruit jams. (2) The labeling system will be managed by the Center for Advanced Technological Development (CRT). The CRT plans to develop a new information system for labeling fish products by April 15. By 2024, Russia aims to establish a unified commodity labeling system across the country to combat the trafficking of counterfeit products. This initiative will eventually extend to mandatory labeling requirements for items such as dairy products, tobacco, and perfumes. The public feedback period closes on February 8, 2022.
