Five things to keep in mind when buying canned food
1. Check the outer packaging: Ensure it’s neat and clean, with clear printing of the text, and verify that the product is within its expiration date. Also, make sure the food label includes essential information such as the company’s name, address, and contact number.
2. Assessing Food Quality: For products packaged in glass bottles, inspect whether the contents retain their original shape and are free from foreign objects or cloudiness. Properly packaged products will exhibit a certain level of vacuum—when you gently tap the bottle cap, you should hear a crisp, clear sound. If there’s no vacuum, it’s highly likely that the product has quality issues.
3. Prevent "bulging cans": Avoid purchasing products whose packaging has changed shape. When food cans become contaminated with microorganisms and lose their edibility, they often develop the "bulging can" phenomenon—where the outer packaging visibly expands in volume.
4. Choose reputable products: Consumers should, whenever possible, purchase from well-established retailers offering products manufactured by reputable companies or by sizable enterprises located in the product’s primary production regions. It’s best to avoid buying items marked down for clearance at the store.
5. Consume promptly: Once a can is opened, it becomes highly susceptible to microbial growth, leading to spoilage and loss of food quality and safety. Consumers are advised to finish the entire contents in one sitting whenever possible, helping to prevent spoilage and avoid foodborne illnesses.
